ODJFS Required Training (2024)

The list of courses is required training for child care providers and staff. Please review the info to learn more about each course and who needs to take them.

Training listed with an asterisk (*) is currently available for completion by logging onto the Ohio Professional Registry (OPR).

Please contact the Ohio Child Care Resource and Referral Association (OCCRRA) staff at 1-877-547-6978, option 1 with any questions on how to create a profile or register for training.

Child Care Center Staff Orientation Training *

This training by ODJFS is on child care center licensing rules. Child Care Staff Members must complete this training or the pre-licensing training within 30 days of hire and before being left alone with children.

The training covers the following Child Care and Development Block Grant required topics and OAC requirements:

  • prevention and control of infectious diseases including immunization requirements
  • prevention of sudden infant death syndrome and the use of safe sleep practices
  • medication policies
  • prevention and responses to emergencies due to food and allergic reactions
  • building and physical premises safety including identification of and protection from hazards, bodies of water and vehicular traffic
  • child management techniques including shaken baby syndrome, prevention of abusive head trauma, and child maltreatment
  • emergency preparedness and response planning for emergencies including evacuation, relocation, shelter in-place, lock down,communication with families, reunification offamilies, continuityof operations, and accommodation of infants and toddlers, children with disabilities, and children with chronic medical conditions
  • handling and storage of hazardous materials and the appropriate disposal of bio-contaminants
  • field/routine trip and transportation safety
  • required training timelines for First Aid, CPR, and child abuse and neglect
  • child development
  • routines and responsibilities
  • active supervision of children
  • classroom routines and responsibilities

Family Child Care Staff Orientation Training *

This training by ODJFS is on family child care licensing rules. Child care staff members must complete this training or the pre-licensing training within 30 days of hire and before being left alone with children.

Pre-Certification Training for an In-Home Aide *

The pre-certification training must be completed prior to submitting an In-Home Aide application.

The training covers the following Child Care and Development Block Grant required topics and Ohio Administrative Code requirements:

  • prevention and control of infectious diseases including immunization requirements
  • prevention of sudden infant death syndrome and the use of safe sleep practices
  • medication policies
  • prevention and responses to emergencies due to food and allergic reactions
  • building and physical premises safety including identification of and protection from hazards, bodies of water, and vehicular traffic
  • child management techniques including shaken baby syndrome, prevention of abusive head trauma, and child maltreatment
  • emergency preparedness and response planning for emergencies including evacuation, relocation, shelter-in-place, lock down, communications with families, reunification offamilies, continuityof operations,accommodation of infants and toddlers, children with disabilities, and children with chronic medical conditions
  • handling and storage of hazardous materials and the appropriate disposal of bio-contaminants

Pre-Camp and Staff Orientation Training for Approved Child Day Camps *

This training by ODJFS must be completed by all child day camp owners prior to applying to become an approved child day camp. All child day camp administrators and staff members (both lead and junior counselors) must complete within 30 days of hire at the day camp and before being left alone with children.

The training covers the following Child Care and Development Block Grant required topics and OAC requirements:

  • prevention and control of infectious diseases including immunization requirements
  • medication policies
  • prevention and responses to emergencies due to food and allergic reactions
  • building and physical premises safety including identification of and protection from hazards, bodies of water, and vehicular traffic
  • child management techniques including prevention of abusive head trauma and child maltreatment
  • emergency preparedness and response planning for emergencies including evacuation, relocation, shelter in-place, lock down, communications with families, reunification offamilies, continuityof operations, accommodationof infants and toddlers,children with disabilities, and children with chronic medical conditions
  • handling and storage of hazardous materials and the appropriate disposal of bio-contaminants
  • field/routine trip and transportation safety

Pre-Licensing Training for Child Care Centers *

The pre-licensing training must be completed by all child care center owners prior to submitting a licensing application.

Each module covers topics that must be considered prior to beginning the process to become a licensed program. This training contains the following modules: The Business of Operating a Child Care Program; How to Apply to Become a Child Care Center Provider; Child Care Center Staff Orientation Training and Licensing Rule Review; Step Up To Quality; and Publicly Funded Child Care.

The Staff Orientation Training module includes the following Child Care and Development Block Grant required topics and Ohio Administrative Code requirements:

ODJFS Child Care Transportation Training *

Each child care center and family child care home employee and Child Care Staff Members (CCSM) who will provide transportation must complete thisone-time ODJFS trainingprior to transporting children. This is the only training available that meets the requirements for the completion of transportation training.

Initial and Ongoing Child Care Center Administrator Rule Training Requirements

Health Training

Health trainingis documented by any one of the following:

Audiovisual or electronic media training may not be used to meet the CPR training requirement of this rule unless there is also an in-person component of the training. The health training listed below does not count toward the annual six-clock hours of required ongoing professional development training.

First Aid

All licensed Family Child Care (FCC) providers and Child Care Staff Members (CCSM) must be currently trained in first aid appropriate to the age and developmental levels of the children in care. The training must be completed within the first ninety days of hire. This may be combined with CPR training if there is an in-person component.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

All licensed FCC providers and CCSM must be currently trained in CPR appropriate to the age and developmental levels of the children in care. The training must be completed within the first ninety days of hire. This may be combined with First Aid training if there is an in-person component.

Management of Communicable Diseases *

Child Care Centers - The requirement is to have at least one CCSM on-site (in each building) during all hours of operation who is currently trained in the Management of Communicable Diseases.
Family Child Care- A licensed FCC provider is to maintain current training in the Management of Communicable Diseases.

ODJFS Child Abuse and Neglect Recognition and Prevention Training *

Early childhood professionals are mandated reporters of child maltreatment. This training by ODJFS was developed to meet the training requirements in licensing rules. Completion of this course meets the staff training requirement for child abuse and neglect recognition and prevention.
